Estate Planning: An Introduction

Let’s talk about something that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves—estate planning! Now, before you scroll past, thinking, “That’s for rich people, not me,” hang on a second. Estate planning is for everyone—yes, that includes you! No matter your age (as long as you’re 18+), your financial situation, or your family dynamics, having an estate plan in place is one of the smartest things you can do for yourself and your loved ones.

What is an Estate Plan, Anyway?

Simply put, an estate plan is a collection of legal documents that act as your “instruction manual” for what happens to your assets, responsibilities, and even your health care decisions when you can no longer manage them yourself. It helps ensure that your wishes—not the government’s default rules—determine who gets what and who makes decisions on your behalf.  Estate planning can also include things like life and disability insurance.

Creating an estate plan doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. At its core, a basic plan typically includes:

  • A Will or Trust – This spells out how you want your assets to be distributed after you pass away. A will is a great start, but a trust might offer extra benefits, like avoiding probate and more control and flexibility, depending on your situation.
  • Financial Power of Attorney – This document designates someone you trust to handle your financial matters if you cannot do so yourself.
  • Medical Power of Attorney – This allows a trusted person to make healthcare decisions for you if you cannot communicate your wishes.
  • Living Will – This outlines your preferences for medical treatment in situations where you may be on life support or facing end-of-life care.

Why Bother with an Estate Plan?

While having an estate plan is not legally required, it’s incredibly important. Without one, the courts decide how your assets are divided based on state laws—which may not align with your wishes. This can create unnecessary stress, delays, and even conflict among your loved ones.

Estate planning isn’t just about money, either. If you have children, having an estate plan allows you to express your wishes for who should care for them, which can help guide the court’s decision rather than leaving it entirely up to the legal system. It also gives you control over who makes critical medical and financial decisions if you’re ever incapacitated.

Estate Planning is for Everyone!

A common misconception is that estate planning is only for retirees. In reality, everyone benefits from having a plan in place. If you’re a young adult, newly married, a parent with small kids, or even someone who wants peace of mind, getting these documents in order is one of the best gifts you can give yourself and your loved ones.
